Career Opportunities

1) Project Safety Manager
Requirements and Responsibilities:

  • A Health and Safety professional with minimum 5 years of leadership/management experience in the construction sector (industrial, chemical plant, large-scaled institutional, or heavy civil preferred);
  • Proven experience in developing and implementing progressive Health and Safety programs;
  • Representing Commonwealth in all health and safety matters internal and externally;
  • Supervising a team of safety professionals;
  • Requires excellent interpersonal/communication skills and professionalism;
  • Requires post-secondary education in Health and Safety (for example, BCIT Occupational Health and Safety Program) or CSO certification;
  • CRSP designation would be a definite asset;

2) Project Safety Coordinators
Requirements and Responsibilities:

  • Act as a resource to assist management/construction leadership team in implementing and administering Commonwealth’s Safety Program and other safety and loss management programs as necessary;
  • Demonstrate by attitude and example, communication and leadership, Commonwealth’s commitment in promoting a 100% safe culture;
  • Ensure implementation and compliance to the HS&E Management Program;
  • Identify and arrange required HS&E training;
  • Advise management team on HS&E issues;
  • Collect, prepare and maintain all required HS&E data and statistic as required by Commonwealth’s HS&E Management Program;
  • Prepare and issue HS&E performance reports;
  • Monitor compliance to project, client, and regulatory requirements;
  • Initiate corrective action through line or senior management;
  • Interface with senior management, line supervision, subcontractors and other project stakeholders on HS&E issues;
  • Participate in new worker safety orientation;
  • Prepare and communicate site-specific emergency response plan and responsibilities to all personnel assigned to the work area;
  • Requires post-secondary education in Health and Safety (for example, BCIT Occupational Health and Safety Program) or CSO certification.

3) Chief Estimator
Requirements and Responsibilities:

  • Assisting in training, developing and maintaining a staff of estimators;
  • Establishing guidelines for the preparation and review of cost estimates;
  • Assigning project contingencies by identifying areas of risk and associated risk levels;
  • Assigning projects and supervising personnel activities;
  • Combining discipline estimates to arrive at a final cost estimate;
  • Reviewing contractual documents and modifications to determine scope of work/changes;
  • Assisting with project management and business development;
  • Interfacing with clients;
  • Developing measures for quality improvement;
  • Requires minimum 10 years of directly related work experience; experience estimating capital projects involving engineering, procurement, construction management and construction; and a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline such as Construction Management or an Engineering discipline (or equivalent additional experience/training). Engineering license in Canada (P.Eng.) or professional Quantity Surveyor certification are definite assets.

4) Project Scheduler
Requirements and Responsibilities:

  • Create, maintain and communicate schedules of activities that adhere to project requirements;
  • Assign resources to activities in keeping with the budget as determined by project management;
  • Develop and maintain (using Primavera Project Planner), the project baseline and progress schedules. Included with schedule controls are the following activities: Turnover System Tracking and Reporting Systems, Overall Project Schedule;
  • Support the preparation of weekly and monthly reports in conjunction with Management;
  • Monitor and report progress against the reimbursable project including the maintenance of labour histograms;
  • Document the performance of the project concerning schedule and progress;
  • Enforce contract requirements with respect to scheduling;
  • Take and active role in safety leadership at the field site;
  • Liaise with Owner’s Representative;
  • Prepare detailed short term ‘look ahead’ schedules;
  • Act responsibly and professionally in representing Commonwealth in all activities and relationships associated with this assignment;
  • Requires minimum 3 years of experience in project scheduling with a degree/diploma in civil, mechanical or construction management/engineering. Experience in database development and maintenance is a strong asset.

5) Project Controls
Requirements and Responsibilities:

  • Collecting project data and producing cost and schedule reports;
  • Preparing estimates and schedules for trends and scope changes;
  • Assisting with setting up and managing contracts of materials and subcontractors;
  • Developing and maintaining the client's cost analysis database;
  • Providing project cost analysis and performance data; and liaising, consulting and communicating with clients, engineers, estimators, subcontractors and project execution teams.
  • Requires minimum 3 years of experience in project controls and cost analysis with a degree/diploma in civil, mechanical or construction management/engineering. Experience in database development and maintenance, or an accounting/business/financial background, is a strong asset.

6) Construction Managers
Requirements and Responsibilities:

  • Providing positive leadership that will support safe, secure, timely and cost-effective field construction;
  • Reporting and executing project strategies and plans;
  • Scheduling and providing overall management related to strategic project goals;
  • Taking the lead in managing our client relationship;
  • Requires a minimum of 10 years of experience in heavy industrial construction including 5 years of senior-level project management/leadership experience; proven track record of achieving timely results within budget; strong computer skills; and excellent interpersonal/motivational skills. A related college degree is an asset.

7) Project Engineers
Requirements and Responsibilities:

  • Providing Technical clarification and advice to the project team on drawings;
  • Managing the issuing and tracking of all related Requests For Information;
  • Supervising field engineers/technicians in the tracking of project change and technical clarification;
  • Supervising the project document control system ensuring compliance with the QA/QC manual and field requirements;
  • Supervise the project Change Management System;
  • Assisting with the coordination of the day-to-day activities of an integrated owner/engineering/contractor project execution team for an assigned process unit or area;
  • Ensuring that project activities are carried out to meet quality, safety, productivity and schedule requirements/expectations as outlined in agreement, as well as assuring appropriate risk assessment vs. economic benefits for innovative ideas;
  • Requires a degree in Engineering (minimum BSc or equivalent); 5 to 8 years of field experience in construction; competency in management of major projects, quality management, contractor/client relations and team leadership. Additional related training is a strong asset.

8) Estimators (Civil/Structural, Mechanical, Piping, Electrical)
Requirements and Responsibilities:

  • Coordinating with vendors, suppliers, and subcontractors;
  • Determining the scope of work and defining contractual requirements for the project;
  • Quantifying all aspects of the tender documents;
  • Preparing detailed estimates; assembling proposal documents and requests;
  • Reviewing and interpreting contractual work scopes and obligations;
  • Completing post-bid analysis on unsuccessful bids;
  • Conducting project close out reviews; and implementing productivity and cost improvements;
  • Requires estimating/quantity surveying experience (Industrial Construction a plus) and proficiency in a variety of analytical tools and computer systems. Certified Professional Quantity Surveyor or equivalent, or working towards it, is a plus.

9) Project Administration Managers
Requirements and Responsibilities:

  • Position is responsible for planning, monitoring and applying accounting principles within set systems, policies, and procedures to achieve financial objectives.
  • Ensuring necessary paperwork is received; verifying data;
  • Reviewing reports and edits to ensure compliance with contracts;
  • Preparing purchase requisitions and orders; completing division reporting, monthly, quarterly and yearly;
  • Analyzing and reporting billings status for management/staff;
  • Maintaining operations by initiating, recommending, coordinating, and enforcing program, operational and personnel policies and procedures;
  • Requires 5 years of demonstrated project-related experience and either a Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting or Business Administration, or 3 years of experience working in Process Automation projects/Projects Administration and Control. Must be experienced in applications of estimating, tracking and controlling of financial/accounting activities and processes.

10) Field Construction Engineers
Requirements and Responsibilities:

  • Support construction crews on construction activities, contract specifications, drawings interpretations & specs, scheduling, and QA/QC standards;
  • Maintain ongoing communication with field Superintendents and Project Site staff and maintain awareness of relevant information on construction activities;
  • Provide technical clarification and advice to the project team on drawings, specifications, standards, and procedures;
  • Work closely with project scheduler to be knowledgeable of the tracking of all field work assigned under his responsibility;
  • Review procedures with the QA/QC department to ensure compliance to specifications & Standards;
  • Issue and provide proper documentation required by the site engineering and coordination systems;
  • Enforce contract requirements with respect to specifications & standards;
  • Regularly report highlights and variances impacting the progression of construction activities assigned to the project engineers;
  • Monitor and track construction progress and periodically report to the project controls department for schedule and costing updates;
  • Prepare Requests for Information;
  • Assist the Project Engineer in the preparation of weekly/monthly progress reports;
  • Take an active role in safety leadership at the field site.
